OCTOBER 23, 2007, ATLANTA—Calix will demonstrate advanced new IPTV and
internet video services delivered over the Calix C7 and E5 access platforms at
TelcoTV in Atlanta (October 23-25, Georgia World Congress Center, booth #613).
This demonstration of standard and high-definition video over 2.5 Gbps GPON,
VDSL2, and ADSL2+ will include such rich IPTV features as picture-in-picture,
instant channel change, digital video recording, interactive caller ID, and
video on demand, as well as advanced new on-demand and broadcast internet video
currently being deployed by Calix customers.
The end-to-end
ecosystem delivering the IPTV demonstrations will include a number of Calix
Compatible interoperability partners and industry leaders including 180Squared,
Scientific Atlanta, a Cisco company, Clear Access, Motorola, and
Tandberg. Service providers seeking to establish clear differentiation from
their cable and satellite competitors are increasingly looking to these leaders
for a superior IPTV user experience, and to Calix fiber to the premises (FTTP)
and advanced DSL solutions for the bandwidth and quality of service required to
deliver such applications.
Matt Davis, director of multiplay research with IDC, said
"Calix is an established access provider with a growing installed base of GPON,
VDSL2 and ADSL2+ deployments in the North American marketplace. By supporting
an array of advanced video services, service providers can match leading-edge
broadband access technology with globally deployed IPTV and internet video
platforms. This combination creates the potential for the delivery of advanced
multiplay service that will deliver a truly differentiated service offering
from cable and satellite."
Calix will also be highlighting robust new broadband
services from Clear Access, GridNetworks, MobiTV, and Vudu that are currently
being deployed by Calix customers. Clear Access is providing DSL modems for the
IPTV demonstrations, as well as its TR-69 auto-configuration server (ACS) integrated
with the Calix Management System (CMS), creating opportunities for remote
service provisioning, troubleshooting, and home network management across FTTP
and DSL. The GridNetworks, MobiTV, and Vudu services, which promote broadband
service penetration, retention, and "upsell" opportunities by providing
on-demand access to top Hollywood films or broadcast video content, are
redefining how entertainment content is being delivered over the Internet and
are currently being deployed by Calix customers.
According to Geoff Burke, Calix director of field marketing,
"This TelcoTV demonstration of advanced IPTV and broadband applications creates
a clear picture of how service providers are raising the bar in redefining the
integrated home experience. Combine these services with Calix access solutions
that provide bandwidth options up to two orders of magnitude greater than even
DOCSIS 3.0-enabled cable operators, and you have a clear answer for
communications service providers looking for ways to compete and win."
The multifaceted demonstrations employ ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4
AVC and VC-1 to encode both standard and high-definition video content for
delivery over three types of access infrastructure: GPON operating at 2.5 Gbps
and delivered over Calix 700G ONTs with Gigabit Ethernet subscriber-side ports,
VDSL2 operating at 25 Mbps, and ADSL2+ operating at 15 Mbps.
Specific enabling technologies being highlighted by Calix
include the following:
- IPTV middleware, which provides a robust service environment
including picture-in-picture, instant channel change functionality, digital
video recording, and video on demand
- Set-top boxes from Scientific Atlanta and Motorola that
support MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 SD and HD content as well as digital video
recording
- Advanced applications from 180Squared that provide caller ID
monitoring and management on the TV
- MPEG-4 AVC encoding
and compression systems designed for delivery of HD-IPTV content from Tandberg
Television
- Internet video appliances and services from GridNetworks,
MobiTV, and Vudu that allow service providers to deliver on-demand video and
monetize internet-based video content
