SEPTEMBER 5, 2006 PETALUMA, CA—Calix today announced that
it will host the fall meeting of the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) group
at the Doubletree Hotel in Rohnert Park, California, from September 5-7. FSAN,
which is comprised of leading service providers and equipment suppliers from
around the world, drives standards for all types of passive optical networking
(PON). At the fall meeting, members will discuss two major issues: the
next-generation access network and gigabit PON (GPON) interoperability. Calix
will also host a meeting of the Optical Access Network Working Group (OAN-WG)
of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on Sept. 8 to discuss
updates from the FSAN meeting. In addition, Calix engineers will participate in
FSAN's interoperability test event sponsored by testing lab KTL and held
simultaneously in Santa Clara, California.
During the FSAN meeting members will work toward ensuring a smooth
transition from GPON to the next-generation access network. Many expect the
transition will involve a form of wave division multiplexing (WDM), with a
separate wavelength to every home, making the GPON specification blind to the
WDM wavelengths so GPON and WDM can co-exist on the same fiber. Attendees will
also discuss GPON interoperability, with a focus on solutions for
interoperability at layer 3. At this universal management layer the ONT Management
and Control Interface (OMCI) will enable any OLT to provision and control any
ONT. At the subsequent ITU meeting, FSAN members and ITU members will discuss
the results of the FSAN meeting.
"Along with other FSAN members, Calix believes strongly that open,
multi-vendor interoperability is a necessary prerequisite for broad and
reliable GPON deployment by service providers," said Dr. David Cleary, vice
president of advanced technology at Calix. "FSAN expects the GPON market to
grow significantly over the next few years; seamless interoperability among
GPON suppliers will be a win for all participants."
At the test event, engineers from Calix and other FSAN vendor
members will test their equipment for data service activation using OMCI. Calix
has already demonstrated full interoperability at the physical and link layers
in earlier test events. Test cases will be drawn from the GPON Interoperability
Test Plan Working Text, edited by Dr. Cleary. The goal of the on-going test
events is to achieve true multi-vendor interoperability.
About Calix
Calix is the largest telecom equipment supplier focused solely on access solutions for
broadband service delivery. Service providers deploy Calix access systems to
enable a rich set of information, communication, and entertainment services and
to expand their revenue base beyond connectivity. Calix access innovation helps
service providers transform their networks from circuit to packet, narrowband
to broadband, and to drive fiber deeper into the network. Calix has deployed
its solutions in hundreds of service provider networks throughout North
America, and has shipped more than two million ports. For more information,
